Reviews of Arcadia – A Memoir

“A wonderful way to let folks know what growing up in a little town in Kansas was all about. It is a great book for people of all ages to enjoy.”
“Written in straightforward prose, “Arcadia” is rich in detail and spot-on portraits of grandmothers, children, beer-drinkers, lawyers, preachers, railroad workers, miners, and many others. . I highly recommend it.”
“I recommend this delightful book to anyone wanting to recall a time when life was simple and innocent, with some interesting history thrown in to boot.”
“It’s important to remember how simple life was back in the 30’s and 40’s – how we had to amuse ourselves as children and use our imaginations in play. Loved this account of how happy their lives were, despite the lack of modern conveniences we all enjoy today!”
“I was wowed by this account of life in little Arcadia, Kansas, mainly between the wars. “Heading for the fishing hole” itself conjures up memories of days gone by, when kids were just out on their own, following their imaginations–you know, just playing! If you’re into nostalgia, you will love this book.”
“Written in episodic fashion, you can flip open to any page to be charmed by the down to earth commentary and reminiscences. Get it for yourself and buy a few for friends. You’ll be glad you did.”
“William Turner captures his readers with his account of life in Arcadia. The times were hard for the people, but they were self-sufficient. I enjoyed the stories of the buddy’s club house and fishing adventures.”
“This is an amazing account of life, love and loss that molds a young child and lasts a lifetime. Great read.”
“Autobiographical account of Middle America and the South during the first part of the 20th century.”
“I laughed and cried…and laughed, then laughed some more! The characters are real and Arcadia is written for all age groups. A fun story for grade school children, too. Grandparents will enjoy reading this book and share the story with their Grandchildren. A book for everyone you love. The story of Arcadia is honestly one you will never forget.”
“A strong-willed grandmother raises a boy in the 1930s in a small Kansas town.”
“An adventurous lad, his pals, beer-drinkers, lawyers, preachers, and railroad workers blend in the telling of this story.”
“Enjoyed everything about this book. I had intended to read the first chapter or two before going to bed but ended up not getting much sleep that night because I couldn’t put it down. Sure, it’s a true-life account of growing up in a small midwestern town in the 1930’s-40’s, but just describing it like that doesn’t say enough. The rich details, the vibrant personalities, the many fascinating episodes truly brought this world to life, made me feel I had personally experienced it. A fine example of how engaging honest storytelling can be. Highly recommended.”
“Burlingame where my Mom’s parents were born, my Mom grew up, and childhood summers in the 50s and 60s. Same world and sentiments as those sweetly pictured here in this autobiography of life in 1930s Arcadia, Kansas.”
“Reading this book brought back many of my own memories of growing up in a small Kansas town. It’s a Great read.”
“I truly enjoyed learning a lot more history about this little town as well as Mr. Turners personal stories, and all the escapades of him and his friends. Mischievous and creative as well as adventuresome and sometimes foolish those boys had quite the life! The book “Arcadia” also brought back many memories for me of my days growing up in a very small town in Southeast Kansas. A wonderful way to let folks know what growing up in a little town in Kansas was all about. It is a great book for people of all ages to enjoy.”
“I recommend this delightful book to anyone wanting to recall a time when life was simple and innocent, with some interesting history thrown in to boot.”
“I was delighted with this book…reading it was like going home.”
